Congratulations to Senior Caribou Ecologist Melanie Dickie who was awarded the Georgina Mace Prize 2023: Early Career Researcher Award from the British Ecological Society.
The award celebrates the best article in the journal Ecological Solutions and Evidence by an early career researcher. The article, Applying remote sensing for large-landscape problems: Inventorying and tracking habitat recovery for a broadly distributed Species At Risk used multiple remote sensing tools to collect data on woodland caribou habitat in the boreal forests of Canada. Photogrammetry and lidar data were fused to gain a detailed understanding of vegetation type and height on anthropogenic features. It’s a promising technique for efficiently cataloguing vegetation across large areas to inform restoration planning for woodland caribou habitat.
